急速なグローバル化の進展により、多文化間のコンフリクトがいたるところで噴出しています。コンフリクトには実に多様な現れがあり、そのひとつひとつが、わたしたちが取り組むべき課題を形成しています。そして、コンフリクトがあるところには共生の理想が宿り、多文化共生社会の実現に向けた希望が生まれます。

こうしたグローバル化社会における多元的共生の諸課題を解決するための学知、それが統合人間学です。既存の様々な人間をめぐる学を統合するという意味における統合人間学の根幹には、新たな教養・リベラルアーツという理念があります。本プログラムが提示する教養は、これまでの受け身の教養ではなく、グローバル化した現代世界を理解し、その中で活躍できる人材に求められる、「攻める」教養、すなわち創造・発信・実践、社会との連携へと直結する教養です。高度な専門性を備えたうえで、さらに広い視座を獲得し、それらに基づく洞察力と統合力をもって協働し、共に新たな課題を発見し、新たな価値を創造・発信・実践していく学知です。

このような教育目標に基づき、本プログラムは、学際的・国際的領域としての統合人間学を修め、地球市民として多文化共生社会実現のための豊かな専門性とグローバルな教養を身に着け、社会との連携を通して創造的・具体的に実践する次世代トップリーダーを養成し、人文学・社会科学・自然科学の新たな大学院教育の理念になりうる統合人間学を社会に提示することを目指します。

共生のための統合人間学のテーマ群と地域群

では、具体的にはどのようにして多文化共生の課題にチャレンジすることができるでしょうか。本プログラムでは、統合人間学が扱うべき課題を、概念的な枠組みで、6つのテーマとして設定しました。価値・感性、格差・人権、移動・境界、情報・メディア、生命・環境、科学技術・社会の6つです。それぞれはどれも協働型の知見を必須とする複合領域であり、多様なディシプリン間の交渉によって、最先端の理論を生み出しうるテーマ群です。さらに、これらテーマ群により明快な具体性を与えるために、5つの地域的枠組み─ヨーロッパ、日本、東アジア、中東・アフリカ、アメリカ・太平洋─を交差させて考えていきます。テーマ的課題を現実に即して把握し、解決に向けた提案・実践へと直結させるために、必須となる枠組みです。この6つのテーマと5つの地域はそれぞれユニットを構成します。プログラム生はテーマユニットと地域ユニットからそれぞれ1つ、計2つのユニットを選択し、所属ユニットそして複数のユニットからなる教育プロジェクトの活動に参加することになります。

文化的価値のコンフリクトを人間の「交感」のありように注視し、感性のレベルから解き明かす

情報・メディア
デジタル・メディアがもたらす時間・空間の感覚、公的・私的領域の相互浸透。デジタル化時代の倫理を問い、ジャーナリスト、表現者を養成する

格差・人権
世代、貧富、国家、言語、民族、都市と地方、ジェンダー、障がい。様々な格差、そこで問われる人権の問題に取り組む

生命・環境
地球環境、宇宙環境に住まう人間を生命の観点において捉え、そこに存する人間と自然の摩擦と共存、更には共栄という問題圏にチャレンジする

移動・境界
多国籍企業内部の文化摩擦、有効な資源ガバナンスの構築、国際移民をめぐる包摂と排除などの問題の解決に取り組む

科学技術・社会
人間と科学技術と社会の三組構造の理解を促進し、科学技術社会における共生のスペシャリストを養成する

EU諸国の経験と文化を多角的に理解し、「市民社会」の実験場としてのヨーロッパ的共生の概念の成立と可能性を改めて探る

中東・アフリカ
移民や貧困の問題を人間の安全保障と共生の観点から理解するとともに、イスラームに関して宗教的寛容さについての理解を深める

日本
日本における多文化社会形成の歴史的背景を理解した上で、日本文化の多様性が今日的な共生のためにどのような理論的枠組みを提供しうるのかを吟味する

アメリカ・太平洋
アメリカ流の新自由主義／新保守主義と多文化主義に焦点を当てながら、グローバル化に抗する多文化共生社会の可能性を模索する

東アジア
東アジア諸国の国家形成の歴史、および国家間の歴史をふまえた多様な価値観ならびにその複雑な現実を深く理解し、その地政学的リスクを熟知することを目指す

国際的・学際的なメンターズチームが学生のキャリアパスをサポートします。プログラムカルテを利用し、学生一人一人のニーズに応じたオーダーメイドの大学院教育を実現します。

2．多彩なインターンシップ
産業界・官公庁との社会連携を強化し、多彩なインターンシップ先を用意します。また、人文学⇔自然科学⇔社会科学の研究室を巡る、学内インターンシップを実施します。

3．留学プログラムと国際経験・3つの外国語に習熟
グラデュエート・カンファレンスや短期留学プログラムなど、国際的な環境での現場教育を行います。また、プログラム学生は英語に加えて、他のヨーロッパ地域言語1ヶ国語、アジア地域言語1ヶ国語を修得します。

Concept

New learning for the creation of a new multicultural society

The rapid advance of globalization has given rise to intercultural conflicts wherever one looks. The world of tomorrow requires leaders who are able to grasp the cultural roots of such conflicts and take action in order to establish a society where the peoples of different cultures can live together in peace.

The aim of our program is to nurture such leaders through mentoring them in the Integrated Human Sciences—a new academic discipline that focuses on developing lasting solutions for the numerous problems stemming from the challenges associated with the need for peaceful coexistence in our globalized society. Taking its cue from traditional liberal arts education, the discipline of Integrated Human Sciences unifies the various fields of study relating to human beings.

The education that we provide in our program encourages our students to be proactive as they learn about the globalized world of today and work to acquire the communicative and creative implementation skills necessary to take a leading role in the world of tomorrow. The students graduating from this program will be equipped not only with a high level of expertise and a broad perspective on matters relating to human society, but with the insight and integrative ability required for collaborating with others in locating the problems and solving them through the creation and communication of new values, and through concrete actions in society.

The Integrated Human Sciences Program for Cultural Diversity (IHS) will produce the leaders of the next generation who will utilize the knowledge and skills they acquire through their interdisciplinary study of the Integrated Human Sciences to contribute in a creative and concrete way towards the building of the multicultural society of the future. Through the development of Integrated Human Sciences as a discipline, the program also aims to present to the society a new vision of the way in which the traditional disciplines of the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences should be cultivated and taught at the graduate school level.

Integrated Human Sciences: Themes for Cultural Diversity

To address the challenges presented by cultural diversity through the Integrated Human Sciences, the courses in the program are structured around six themes: “Values & Sensitivities”, “Disparities & Human Rights”, “Human Mobility & Borders”, “Information & Media”, “Life & the Environment”, and “Science, Technology, & Society”. Each of these themes is approached though a combination of different disciplines in the hope that this synergistic approach will produce new ways of understanding and solving the problems relating to each of them. In order to give these themes a clear and specific context, they are applied to five different regions of the globe. This cross-combination of themes and regions will provide the framework for linking the understanding of the real-life situations with concrete proposals and actions for the resolution of the problems.

Six Themes for Coexistence

Values & Sensitivities
This theme elucidates the mechanism through which conflicts arise. It focuses on the differences in cultural values as it highlights human sensitivities and the nature of human interaction to find the means of resolving such conflicts.

Information & Media
This theme explores the ethics of the digital age that is characterized by the changed perceptions of time and space and the interpenetration of the public and private domains. It aims to nurture a new generation of journalists and communicators.

Disparities & Human Rights
This theme tackles the problems associated with the generational differences as well as with wealth disparities. Other areas of interest include states, languages, ethnicity, urban / rural areas, gender, and disability, and the resulting human rights questions.

Life & The Environment
This theme examines the human beings living on earth and in space from the perspective of “life”. The courses coming under this theme aim to nurture experts who will tackle the issues relating to the coexistence of humankind with nature.

Human Mobility & Borders
This theme proposes to look at society by focusing on the following concepts: human mobility and borders. The courses coming under this theme aim to find solutions to problems relating to such issues as cultural frictions within multicultural corporations, resource governance, and integration of international migrants.

Science, Technology, & Society
This theme explores the complex interrelationship between human beings, science and technology, and society. The courses that come under this theme aim to nurture individuals who will serve to promote peaceful coexistence in technologically advanced societies.

Five Regional Units of Coexistence

Europe
This unit aims to have an overview of European concept of cultural coexistence through the studies on the literature of “civil society” and the fieldwork in the EU countries.

Middle East & Africa
This unit explores the issues on immigrants and poverty from the perspectives of human security and coexistence, deepening the understanding of the diverse cultures of Middle East and Africa.

Japan
This unit examines the possibility of diverse Japanese culture to contribute to the construction of theoretical framework for contemporary coexistence, based on the understanding of its historical background.

Americas & Pacific
This unit focuses on exploring societies that embrace diversity and that resist forces of globalization, particularly focusing on the concept of American neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism as well as multiculturalism.

East Asia
This unit pursues thorough understanding on the diverse standards of value based on the history of East Asian nation states and their international relationships as well as their geopolitical risks.

Providing a Unique Graduate Education

The International Team of Mentors
An international and multidisciplinary team of mentors supports the career progression of students. The program progress chart is used to provide graduate education customized to the needs of each individual student.
A Variety of Internships
A wide range of opportunities for internships is offered through collaboration with industry and government. The program also offers opportunities for “internal internships” – that is, internships that allow students to gain experience in a research environment that is different from their original area of expertise (the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences).
Overseas Study Programs and International Experiences
Onsite education in an international environment is offered through graduate conferences and short-term study programs. In addition to improving their English language skills, students on the program will have the opportunity to study other European and Asian languages.
Education for Mature Students
The program offers opportunities for lifelong learning. Our mature students are certain to contribute to ensuring that the society at large enjoys the benefits that the knowledge generated by the discipline of Integrated Human Sciences provides.
Links with Undergraduate Education
In collaboration with the undergraduate Global Human Resources Development Program, IHS provides a system of educational support that spans nine years from entering University to completing Graduate School.
